The Rainbow Warrior Series (#1 of 3)

September 10, 2005 - On the 20th anniversary of the bombing of Greenpeace's Rainbow Warrior, the Rainbow Warrior II visited Australia. The Greenpeace flagship was bombed and sunk at night on July 10, 1985 whilst at the Auckland harbour in New Zealand. Operatives of French intelligence (DGSE) were behind the sinking, where one crew member died.

The new Rainbow Warrior, pictured above, was launched on July 10, 1989. This was exactly four years after the first ship was bombed.

The new ship has a number of interesting features, including a 1.8 metre dolphin carved from oak and fixed to the foredeck that was donated by a local support group in Germany, the wheel from the original Rainbow Warrior in front of the bridge and the original bell that hangs in the ship's mess.

This is the first of three photographs in the Rainbow Warrior series.
