The Farley Mowat
July 16, 2006 - This is a photo of the anti-whaling ship Farley Mowat, taken on the eve of its departure from Fremantle to Melbourne.
"The Sea Shepherd Conservation Society was founded in 1977 in Vancouver BC by Captain Paul Watson. The mandate of the organization was marine mammal protection and conservation with an immediate goal of shutting down illegal whaling and sealing operations." - http://www.seashepherd.org/
During Farley Mowat's visit, the City of Fremantle also announced that the ship could call Fremantle its home port - making it only the second vessel in the city's history to receive this distinction.
Captain Paul Watson, who was chosen by TIME Magazine as one of the environmental heroes of the 20th Century in the year 2000, actually commands the Farley Mowat out onto the icy waters of the Southern Oceans of Antarctica to get up close and personal with the Japanese whaling ships. The Farley Mowat harasses, obstructs and rams into these whale-killing ships, taking the initiative to protect these great mammals head on. They do not do this to protest whaling, but to intervene with the purpose of upholding international laws protecting the whales.
Sea Shepherd is looking to raise $2.5 million to purchase another vessel to support the Farley Mowat in its cause.
